 Model #3 "Empire"

Empire

I chose this design because it's reminiscent of the bold, "sky scraper", architectural styles of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings in New York. In the 20's and 30' these patterns found their way into everyday functional objects like coffee pots, vacuum cleaners, and especially clocks.

This clock is patterned after a model that Gilbert manufactured for awhile. I bought one years ago and loved the overall look but hated the hands and face they had stuck into it; they were totally inappropriate for the very Art Deco styling of the shell. The body of the clock was also originally thin shell die cast metal painted black which was very typical for a depression era clock. I felt they had missed an opportunity to create something significantly better though, it could have been beautiful had they done it in Catalyn (of course it probably would have been too expensive that way). It was also originally an alarm clock, a daily winder and very, very loud. I'm trying to imagine how anyone ever slept with these things ticking next to them!

In remaking this classic design I've chosen a solid casting with rich gloss, optical quality, plastic. The bezel is cast into the clock itself and blends smoothly with the overall clock shell. It comes with glass crystal, gloss black plastic minute and hour hands and a red sweep second hand. It's available in both solid and swirled patterns.

Ok, so. The clock selection process cover's three pages, you start here by picking the movement style from the available options by clicking on the option you want from one of the two listed directly below. I designed this one to fit one of 2 clock movement styles, a battery powered and a plug in version. In addition to movement choices you'll select the color and pattern and chose from the available dial face styles.

Option 1: Click here for option #1. This movement is a single AA battery powered movement, however it's not a typical quartz movement. It features a smooth, continuous motion sweep second hand that looks quite analog (no jerky motion). It's also nearly silent (compared to other quartz movement) and would be reasonable to use in a bedroom. Battery access is in the rear, on screw removes the back plate to expose the movement.

Option 2: Click here for option #2. A U.S. made 120 Volt compact quartz movement with second hand. This movement is not continuous sweep, it will display the less elegant quartz style motion (where the second hand snaps from one second to the next), it's still a plug-in model though so no batteries to change.
